The Loose-Leaf Tea Flight Manual: Brew Guide
Mastering the perfect cup of loose-leaf tea requires the same attention to detail as a pre-flight inspection. Follow these coordinates for a perfect steep every time.
1. The Hot Steep (The Smooth Cruise)
- Measurement: Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of loose-leaf tea per 8 ounces of water.
- Temperature: Bring fresh, filtered water to a rolling boil (approximately 212°F).
- Time: Steep for 5–7 minutes. Don’t worry it won’t get bitter if over-steeped; it only gets bolder and more tart.
- The Finish: Strain into your favorite teacup and garnish with a slice of lemon.
2. The Flash-Chilled Iced Tea (The Refreshing Descent)
- The Concentrate: Steep 2 teaspoons of loose-leaf tea in just 4 ounces of boiling water for 7 minutes to create a "tea concentrate."
- The Pour: Fill a tall glass with ice and pour the hot concentrate directly over the cubes.
- The Garnish: Add a fresh lemon wheel and a piece of slapped ginger to highlight the tea's natural brightness.
3. The Cold Brew (The Long Haul)
- Method: Add 2 tablespoons of loose-leaf tea to a quart of cold water.
- Time: Refrigerate for 8–12 hours.
- Benefit: This slow extraction results in an incredibly smooth, crisp flavor with zero astringency.
